Thank you Ken, for the information. I am a songwriter and performer and have started to write a novel in the past. Seeing as I have a great love for this movie, I would like to attempt to write a book of my own about it, even if for personal satisfaction. This movie is a wonder that captivates and elevates the mind. One of motion pictures finest works of art. Also one of the most romantic films. As i watch I can almost visualize myself being Joe, and experiencing all he experiences.
Future directors should take lessons from this film. Most movies today are either cutsey love stories, vulgar sex comedies or movies with way too low sound quality for speaking parts and booming ear splitting music and special effects. I guess they don't believe dialogue is important anymore.
Joe Versus the Volcano speaks to the audience and almost every line is important and none wasted.
One of my favorite parts actually is when Joe is with Angelica. By her saying "I have no response to that" is like saying that is not what I wanted to hear. Joe's affect on her is profound and by the time Joe leaves her, you just know she will miss him. He has proven to her he is a valiant, noble character. Now, back to Felix and his bag of tricks.

There is a book containing the script of "Joe Versus the Volcano." It is "Moonstruck, Joe Versus the Volcano, and Five Corners: Screenplays" by John Patrick Shanley. They have it at Amazon.com for $15.00. I hope this helps, Alex.

I kind of get that feeling from this movie, that it was shortened. Nowadays it seems like when you go to the movies, you almost can't wait for it to end. Here it seemes like there could be missing parts or deleted scenes. In one way I would love to see them, but in another I would like to leave the movie as it is. However I do remember the first time I saw the Honeymooners cut out parts! There's a show with a big moon and a face in it! If I knew right now there was a Joe Versus the Volcano book, I would run right out and get it and savor every line. Maybe one day someone will write a book based on the movie.

I once found the original script online---the religious characters on the plane had more of a role.

Alex, religion should be mocked. Relentlessly and without mercy. Patricia's response is as well written as any that has ever made it on film.

There are many eloquent descriptions as to the meaning of Joe Versus the Volcano on this website. I wish my comments could be added to the front screen. I wanted to say that this movie is one of the most inspiring I have ever seen. A couple of comments I would like to make, one in particular that may be shocking. I do not thing that Patricia is Joes' perfect match. I think his journey will continue on past his time with Patricia. I think this mainly because Joe is much more a spiritual person, and she is not.
She sort of took a low blow at Joe when he asked her "Do you belive in God?", she said "I believe in myself", sort of making releigion a mockery.
Joe is a great loveable sort of character, and in my mind he deserves only the best. Megs on boat speech about being soul sick and how she apologized for being mean is somewhat touching, but Joe can convey and command an audience to feel for him with just one look.
In my opinion if the movie were to go on,(call me crazy) there would be one more girl that Joe would tell "The first time I saw you, I felt like I'd seen you before."
One more little thing that I just may have been the only one to spot, when Angelica and Joe are overlooking the "Nice view", her rear liscense plate reads Bad Girl. When she returns to drop him off at the hotel, the front plate reads Good Girl. Use your zoom on the dvd! I do think this is intentionally symbolic, because Joe inspired a change in her.
When Angelica is meeting Joe at the airport, do you see the cast of characters emerging from the plane? lol its a riot. Also look right behind Megs shoulder to see a dark skinned older man staring into the camera.
Also look to see Tom Hanks stopping to stare quizzically at the Great Dane outside the horn of Africa.
Thanks so much for this site, and for anyone who has read my post, I am in the middle of watching Joe one more time. Anybody who sees this movie as just being hokey is just not watching or is a type that is beyond inspiration.

Glad I found this website. Like the others, I thought I was one of very few who loved this movie. Like the others, I find myself quoting the movie.
It's very funny, very deep, and resonating at the same time. It's a very subtle movie that makes you feel good and makes you think at the same time. It also has a timeless quality to it.
The idea of being soul sick is great and I have felt that way myself at times. I liked the idea of loving family members who are screwed up and the time you spend with with isn't always the best.
Again, I'm glad I found this website and others who love this film.

Oh, so I'm NOT the only person who is absolutely crazy about this movie!!! Thanks so much for having this website. My kids and I are always referencing JVTV. For example, when one of my girls and I were climbing the trails at Starved Rock National Park, everytime we saw a trail marker that said "Away," we always added "...from the things of man." Thanks again!!
