I just found this website and I'm so thrilled to read all the comments about this incredible movie. The first time I saw it and heard the music I was in awe. The "brain cloud" liberated him. It gave him the freedom to finally live his life without fear. It was actually kind of a letdown for me when I found out he wasn't going to die, because I thought, does this mean he will go back to old habits. I Love this movie. Everytime I need inspiration I listen to the soundtrack or watch the movie. I never want to be one of those who goes through life"asleep".

Hi Alaskan Traveler. Don't know about the band members, but the "My Fair Lady" song is performed and arranged by Peter Gordon.
Good luck, btw, on a soundtrack. Such a beast, with the 'tunes' doesn't exist. Some of us have tried to gather the songs together to create a homemade soundtrack, but that's about it.
There is a marvelous recording of Georges Delerue's score (symphonic, no tunes), but it's out of print.

Was bored and typed in my maiden name and was surprised to see so many Teri Bishops out there. Hi to all. I also love Joe versus the Volcano. I love fun movies you don't have to concentrate on while watching.

If my memory serves me correctly, an additional occurance of the "zigzag" is the lava flow on the lamp Joe puts on his desk at the beginning of the movie.
It's interesting to see other people's take on the significance of that symbol, referring to it as a lightning bolt, or representing fire or fear. I've always connected it to a line Joe says on the lip of the Volcano: "I've been miserable for so long. Years of my life wasted. Been a long time coming here to meet you. A long time on a crooked road."
The symbol could simply represent the crooked road.
Forgive me if this has been posted before.
I echo the sentiments of some of the previous posters when I say that it is great to see how many other people out there "get it."
Great site.

So I just watched Joe last night for the umpteen millionth time. Being a designer, I've always paid close attention to shot framing and the visuals. This movie has so many great shots in it, it's hard to pick a favorite. I actually just noticed something new last night: when Joe and Patricia are on the boat in the typhoon and they realize they're in love, they are framed out before they kiss (Joe on the left, Patricia on the right). If you look between them, two pulleys for the sails are swinging in the background. They're shaped like hearts. Go watch it again, you know you want to.

I love this movie and I love this website for being here to support it. It's so good to know there are folks around who 'get it.'
On another note, in the 'Sights' section there's a pic called 'Joe saluting factory and saluting the moon' - linking the two. My interpretation is that in the firt frame Joe is actually beseeching God 'Why?' as we all do from time to time. He is lost and in misery. In the second frame, he is marooned on a luggage and floating the ocean but he has found himself and God. So when the moon rises he greets God and says 'thank you for my life.'

I am a new JVTV fan. How great to find your site--I've been searching for information about the movie. I'm heartbroken that I missed out on an opportunity to buy the soundtrack! Maybe it's downloadable somewhere? I LOVE all of the music, but especially Joe singing and playing ukuelele to the moon. All of the speculation about the symbolism here on this site is very interesting!
But why "when Johnny Comes Marching Home?"
