I love JVTV, and happy to see so many others do too! The music from the movie is great, and I'm so glad to have found it on this website.
I think it's interesting that Joe's luggage keeps saving his life. As cumbersome and difficult as our "emotional baggage" can be, the whole reason we create it is to save our own lives, at least, as we understand them at the time...
Also, once Joe decides to take the job offered by Mr. Graynamore--to jump into the volcano (face his fears)--he starts to meet people who really love their jobs.
People have probably mentioned these points before, but I just wanted to write about them...excited about sharing my thoughts with other people who see this movie for what it is...a kind of spiritual experience .

Just saw it again. I am surprised at how often HBO is showing this, but I love it. I have seen it 5 times in the last 3 months.

I can't remember how long ago it was when I first saw this movie. I do remember that it was instantly one of the best movies that I had ever seen. Now years later, I am watching it again with my children. They love it. I am just really happy to watch it with them (they sat through the whole movie).
They especially like the part where they jump into the volcano and the volcano spits them out.
One question: What's with the pregnant waponi girl on the beach?

I would have to add that Georges Delerue's music also greatly enhances Patricia's " soul-sick " scene.....

They have been showing this on cable quite a bit lately. I am watching it again as I write this. My favorite scene has always been when Joe and Patricia talk about jumping into the volcano and her whole "we'll make this leap and we'll see" speech. I especially like the "You're not going anywhere without me" line and their holding hands. Amazing stuff.
But now I have a solid #2 favorite scene. Patricia's speech about her being "soul sick" on the boat, It has to be Meg Ryans best solilique of her acting career. She is so natural in that scene and the lighting is so great. Love it!

Just found a better version of the Joe/Golden Ass book 11 parallel. Click on Website for multiple translations from the Latin, here are selections from Robert Graves' translation:
"Not long afterwards I awoke in sudden terror. A dazzling full moon was rising from the sea...and with joyful eagerness, though tears were running down my hairy face, I offered this soundless prayer to the supreme Goddess...I had scarcely closed my eyes before the apparition of a woman began to rise from the middle of the sea with so lovely a face that the gods themselves would have fallen down in adoration of it"

I love this movie and I love this website. I come here from time to time to see the comments and to listen to the theme song. I would like to list some of the ways JVTV has affected my life.
Using the sounds available from this website, when Windows starts on my PC the short version of the theme plays. When I get email (at work) it's usually from my boss and Joe says, "You look like a bag of sh*t in a cheap suit." My boss heard that once and thought the PC was saying that to me. :>) When I shutdown, I hear, "I have no response to that." BTW, my kids use that line on me now.
I went to the Varese Sarabande website and saw that the JVTV soundtrack was sold out. So I went to eBay to see if it was there. Oh yes, it's there. For EIGHTY BUCKS. I wrote Varese Sarabande about the price on eBay and suggested they re-issue the cd.
Finally, I (like many of you) have trouble falling asleep at times. I read a technique that has helped me. I don't remember the name, but I call it the Rainbow Technique. Basically, it is a way of taking your mind off the things that are keeping you awake, so you can fall asleep. You think of objects that are the individual colors of a rainbow. For example, red - fire truck, orange - traffic cones, yellow - Big Bird. You try to picture each item as clearly and realistically as you can, then try to picture the next. After I watched JVTV one night, I decided to change the objects to things in the movie. Yellow is Patricia in her rain slicker during the storm. Green is Joe practicing his putting on the raft. I couldn't think of anything purple or indigo, so I picture the scene where the moon rises over the ocean. This has worked for me. If I get to the end of the objects, I start over.
Gotta go, my braincloud is acting up.

Somebody's probably noticed this before, but there's a remarkable affinity betwwen the moon arising from the ocean scene in 'Joe vs.' and chapter 47, Book 11 of Apuleius' 'Golden Ass':
Judge for yourself:)

It's on HBO-S right now! :)
Kinda validating that they still play it on cable quasi-regularly.
