Favorite movie of all time. I watch it once or twice per year and never get tired of it.

I would love to get my hands on that lamp!

I just love this story.. I fall asleep to this movie often.. I love how Joe learns to not be afraid and live. Just wanted to say hi and get in on the good Volcano action.. I'm putting together plans to recreate that lamp. Anybody interested?

The three hats:

When Joe enters a new phase of his life-he symbolises his rejection of what had been happening to him-by throwing away his hat. Into the trash can at the office. Into the harbor leaving L.A. But-there is one hat he does not throw away. You see it when he enters his apartment-hanging on a hook. A fireman's helmet. It represents courage. That, he does not reject. That's what carries him into a new life-into the volcano. And, what kind of lamp is that on a table adjacent to the hat rack?

Could it be a lava lamp???????

I saw this movie the day it came out and just thought it was silly. Then 2 years later it played on cable and I saw it again and something started to click. Then the third time I really got it and started showing it to people. I've seen this movie probably more than any other (about 15 times). Everything about it is nearly perfect to me. The symbols, the music, the references in song and visuals to water and the power of nature and life, transformation, courage, etc. I could go on and on. The only other movie that I've seen more than 10 times is the original Star Wars. I thought of it this week after viewing Dr. Paul's MindOS DVD's with David Deangelo where he talked about the importance of courage in the development of becoming a mature man.

To me, the big mistake with this movie is positioning it as a comedy, which is not really where it is in my book. It's got funny lines, but this movie is about life. Anyway, I'm not much of a blogger, but came across this and had to add my 2 cents.

Every time people are being "sold a bill of goods"-there is the duck. When Joe is being told how long he has to live-he practically points at a knickknack duck. When the millionaire comes by to offer Joe peanuts and seek his whiskey-and, his life-he has a duck headed cane. When Joe is being bathed by orange soda loving natives-who pour purple liquid from and "orange soda" can-and blow purple powder onto his face and lick it off-with great relish---first we hear a duck-then we see it-on his luggage. He gives the duck a meaningful look.

On King of the Hill, a local brewery dumps bad beer into Mexico rather than destroy the cans.

What if orange soda cans were acidentally filled with grape soda? Would they be destroyed? Or, dumped with a population that would not know the difference?

Quack, quack!!!!!

To the doctor!

Robert:

Thanks for the answer. I hadn't thought of that particular angle. Many have mentioned the duck as a symbol of the devil. But it could also be a symbol if you consider the duck's sound - "QUACK". Certainly would apply to Dr. Ellison and his diagnosis, and for any time when someone is 'being sold a bill of goods'

I also thought it was interesting that Mr. Graynamore said he didn't have anything the Waponi's would want to trade for the bubureau. He obviously couldn't have done much research. How hard could orange (or grape) soda be to find? Perhaps a reference to western civilization's inability to understand (or even care about) others' societies.

Got my JVTV DVD yesterday. Great to have it to watch whenever I want now. Does anyone have a theory as to the significance, if any, of the building number (941) when Joe comes out of Dr. Ellison's office? It's shown so prominently, it almost has to stand for something.

Also, is that another zig-zag I see in the window above the '941'?? It's a bit stylized, not quite like the walkway, lightning bolt, or the Waponi procession lights, but the stairs, handrail and uprights do seem to form a kind of zigzag. Ah the wonders of freeze-frame and zoom :-)
