David,
Thanks for your question.
I wondered why the orange soda poured out-as Joe is bathed by the islanders-came out of the can purple. Also, why purple powder was blown onto his face and then licked off-by islanders who are supposed to love the flavor orange.
Then, I saw a King of the Hill episode in which locals are wondering why their favorite beer is not available locally-though, they find it is available in Mexico.
Mrs. Hill, in working at the brewery, learns that there was a bad batch of beer-that was dumped in Mexico-and is making people who drink it sick.
This made me start wondering-could the automated canning system have been mistakenly fed orange soda cans for bottling grape soda? Could the mislabled cans have been dumped in a remote area where people would not know the difference? Did the islanders really like grape soda?
Every time a person was sold a "bill of goods" a duck was shown. When Joe is asking "How long?" he is practically pointing at a knickknack duck on the doctor's fireplace mantel. When the millionaire comes to recruit Joe, offering peanuts-asking for whiskey-as well as the rest of Joe's life-he waves a duck headed cane. After Joe sees the purple soda and powder-he hears the quacking of a duck-then looks at a live duck perched on his luggage-giving the duck a significant look.

You are a rockstar! I have been searching for the Marooned song used at the end for a decade (at least), and you had a link to it. THANK YOU!!!!

Robert:
Could you elaborate a bit on the orange soda? To me it seems to be a metaphor for any number of useless consumer products that people, for one reason or another, can't seem to live without. But as to why it comes out purple (which I hadn't noticed, but will look for when the DVD arrives) I'm at a loss. Something special about the color? Other than the connection to royalty?
Thanks!

A small clarification - First of all, didn't notice the typo, should have been Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Also, I didn't mean to sound like I was dissing MST3K. It's also one of my favorite shows. I think I'm building a list of things I'd be looking for in an ideal mate. :-). JVTV, Monty Python, MST3K, and a burning disdain for pompous self-serving people who have no greater goal than to accumulate as much material wealth as they can get their hands on, no matter who they have to step on to get it. That about covers it.
(Note to the book-op. I think this will give an error message when I hit the POST MESSAGE button, but it will probably get through anyway. Anyone know why this is happening?)

Great site. JVTV was on Starz a couple nights ago. I had recorded Marooned off the TV years ago and didn't know the name. Sat thru all the credits and took a guess on the name cuz it was the only one I didn't recognize. Which led me here. Thanks for posting a crystal clear version of the song here - correction, several versions. All I had was the bit from the end of Joe and Angelica's date. Nice to have all the other variations too. It's been looping in Itunes while I read through all the postings here. Even after an hour or more non-stop it still gives me chills. Gives me hope for humanity that so many people are 'awake'. I think JVTV appreciation should be a requirement for political office. I think the world would be a much better place.
I think the first time I heard of the movie I dismissed it because the title sounded a bit odd - like something Myster Science Theatre 3000 would do. But I think I later saw it mentioned in a discussion somewhere in connection to "The Celestine Prophecy", saying that it incorporated a lot of the same philosophy. Next time it was on I watched and it is now among my favorites. Along with "Life of Brian" and - to answer a previous posting - "GATTACA", another great movie about not letting society dictate your life.
Ordered my JVTV DVD from Amazon. Should be here by 10/19. Guess what I'll be watching Wednesday nite... It will be great to be able to replay bits to catch the more subtle things I may have missed.
One interpretation I haven't seen regarding the path to the factory in the beginning. We see the workers walking this ridiculously crooked path to get to work. There is no need to make them take this way other than to degrade them. The thing that struck me though was that no one seemed to think to just cut off the path and walk straight to the building.
Also, a bit of irony - The poor little flower is standing there, people walking by. You just know it's gonna get trampled. But lots of men walk by without touching it. What gets it? A woman. It was obviously a deliberate choice by the writer/director but to what end? That women can get just as desensitized to life and beauty as men?
Guess that's enough for a first posting.
Keep up the good work. A la Neo in The Matrix, we need to get more people "unplugged" or, in JVTV-speak, "Awake"
But some will always be so dependent, so inured, that they will never wake up. Their loss. (had to check the spelling of 'inured', here's the definition:
1. transitive verb - harden somebody to something: to make somebody used to something unpleasant over a period of time, so that he or she no longer is bothered or upset by it.) Sounds like Joe, pre-Doctor Ellison.
Yours in constant, total amazement.

Like most of you I do not understand why people did not like or understand this movie. Everytime I watch it I see something new and watch it whenever I need to be inspired and or need a lift. I am glad I found this site (after watching the movie again tonight) and found that there are others who see the movie for what it really was and enjoy it as much as I do...

It took me forever to find the first level of significance of the orange soda-then, when I saw it I almost choked to death trying to inhale while laughing so hard.
I thought, at that point, that I had exhausted all the symbolism of the movies and I stopped watching it again and again and.......
Then I saw an episode of King of the Hill that tied together several facets of the second meaning of the orange soda---why it came out of the can purple. Why they showed the third duck on the luggage, etc. etc. etc.
I no longer think there are limits to the symbolism-there are layers---approaching infinity-if you remember your integral calulus and the theory of limits.
The first layer, "I think I am losing my sole!" can be seen in the first viewing.
The second layer can be understood after one viewing and without understanding any other symbolism-such as the reading material Joe has in his desk-The ODESSEY, ROBINSON CRUSOE, ROMEO AND JULIET.
But, eventually, you have to understand several aspects of symbolism to understand new ones-such as the second significance of the orange soda.
Of course, you don't have to understand any other symbolism to see the first significance of the orange soda---you just have to notice.
But, where it is placed---it is hard to notice-even though that is exactly where you should look.

It's so nice to find like-minded people who love this movie! I saw it at the theaters when it first came out and I never understood why people hated it. I have always loved the theme of Joe realizing life is a journey and you need to take risks. I need to get the DVD at some point to replace my old VHS.
Kudos to you for your site!

THE THINKERS' MOVIE
Wow! I was entering a Google search for "Joe Versus the Volcano Location Shoot Hawaii" when I came across this amazing site! What a fantastic reference point for this super-underrated, esoteric GENIUS flick!
The movie is haunting. The characters, the well-designed sets, the self-discovery, the witty dialogue, the music... the movie that helped inspire me to become a philosopher ("all the world is asleep except a few"), a neuroscientist ("brain cloud" is a fictitious neuropsychological condition after all!), a psychologist, and all-around believer in life, love, and whimsical movie making.
I recommend this movie to all my higher IQ friends - who love it and understand the profound messages and powerful symbolism. I actually feel sorry for those who view this movie and quickly dismiss it. This movie has much to offer to philosophers, scientists, thinkers, and romantics - and basic movie-goers alike.
I love the fact that there are so many people who appreciate and love this little movie - especially when surrounded by throngs of folks who snarl when the movie title is mentioned. I have an unadulterated, unabashed love affair with this movie, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. And it looks like I'm not alone! :)
We might actually be the same people Patricia was referring to when explaining her father's philosophy - the ones who are actually awake in a severely sleepy world!
By the way, the lamp is mine!
We should all meet in Hawaii for a JVTV conference! If you're a fan of this movie, I'm sure we'd all get along great!!
Take care and God bless,
-Ry
