THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME! I don't know if anyone's noticed before, but there are several shots in the theatrical trailor (DVD) that didn't make it into the movie (mainly Patricia yelling when Joe walks up to the volcano.)

By the way, I think that Graynamore is the Devil. He comes into Joe's appartment, telling him exactly what he wants to hear, and bribes him with earthly possesions. Marshall is Joe's guardian angel. He tries to give Joe advice on life. Patricia represents Joe giving his life to someone besides himself, thus saving him from eternal damnation (the volcano.) Falling in the ocean represents baptism. Also, at the beginning, the "artificail testicles prototype" represents Waturi's cowardice at life. As in "doesn't have the balls to live his own life:) Just a thought, not a sermon.

I seem to return here at least twice a year to renew my spirit and save my "soul." Thank you for keeping this site open. It means so much to read the varied comments about "Joe Versus the Volcano," and know that all who wrote them share the inspiration that a simple (not so simple) movie can give.
I was touch by the gentleman who had finally decided to quit his job and prusue his real dreams, and I wish him the best. I hope he has many moon rises and finds happiness. He deserves it.
So many good things have been said about the movie and what it means. Though varied, they all touch on its humanity and wisdom.
Like all those who come here, I think the movie has many messages. There is one I think very important.
"Joe Versus the Volcano" is about TRUE LOVE, and yes, it should be capitalized. I know that sounds simple, but it is a message we should all be reminded of more and aren't in this fancy, frilly - gotta have a gimick world.
Joe teaches us to want the big WOW and not settle for less than the big WOW. He also tells us how to find it - have courage and have faith.
I think that is a pretty important message for a movie so many pass over without a whisper of understanding.
So, here is to TRUE LOVE, and "Joe Versus the Volcano." May we find it even if we have to sail the farthest seas and jump in a volcano.
All the best to all here.
PS. Graynamore to me means "gray no more." He sets Joe on the journey and changes his life.
Also: Could Dede, Angelica and Patricia be the "three fates"?

I LOVE this movie! Hanks was awesome in it. You are easily pulled in. I cannot explain what it is, the movie is so simplistic, low budget, no real special effects... but there is this draw... and this great feeling you get from having watched it... I suspect Voodoo and subliminal messages.

Way back in 1998 we signed in to this guestbook, VERY sad that we couldn't find a soundtrack. But, we DID find a limited edition CD soundtrack two years ago. Some of our favorite pieces from that soundtrack were then used at our wedding in May 2004! "Marooned Without You" will always be OUR song.

Just now read Mark's interview. Good job! Anyone who has further interest in why Shanley wrote Joe should read the Introduction to his book of screenplays: _Moonstruck, Joe versus the Volcano, and Five Corners_, published by Grove Press, New York.

No, sorry John. You may want to try the Usenet group alt.movies.joe-vs-volcano. Several Joe "experts" hang out there.

Do you know what kind of luggage Joe bought? Daughter and wife think it was Louis Vitton, I am sure it is not. I was thinking it was Mark Cross...do you know?

Sure, Patrick. It's a spanish "On the Street Where You Live", from "My Fair Lady" originally.

Peter Gordon does it.

I just loved this movie. If anyone knows the name of the song the Spanish guitarists play for Joe and Dede on their date right after he quits working for Mr. Waturi, please let me know. Thanks!
