I had seen this movie with my boyfriend who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at that time. We didn't know what the movie was about and I was horrified by the 'brain cloud' diagnosis. My boyfriend loved the movie and our conversation afterwards was very special. He died a few days later. I'm glad I can share this story with others who can understand the movie's magic.

To Rod from Orinda---great that someone else noticed the significance of the hats. Did you notice that he never threw away the fireman's hat-the one he kept on a hook above a LAVA lamp. That's because the hat represents courage-and, that, he does not throw away. When asked what interests him-the response is courage.

For years I have loved this movie in smug silence. Long ago I learned to dismiss the sneers of my peers (hey! I like that! Was that Smokey Robinson and the Miracles?) and came to understand that the world is comprised of 2 kinds of people; those who love J v V and, well, the rest. Some escaped my pity by acknowledging the joy of a nigh spent watching True Stories with David Byrne.
How nice to know that somewhere, out there, there are those who, like me, get chills at the photography art and design of Joe; who, like me, marvel at the scenes in the factory; and who, like me, can forgive Meg Ryan everything else as small reward for her brilliant triple play in the movie.
I have to ask...surely, someone besides me has made "flibbertygiblet" dressing at Thanksgiving, no?

I have been a rabid “Joe” fan for years. Watching this movie is such a soulful experience for me, almost like watching a comic book version of my life. The phrase, “I have no response to that” is a part of my daily life; “it looks fake, I like it,” is a comment on my world, I have this urge to solve the world’s “luggage problems” at every turn. And every time I want to change my life, I get this overwhelming urge to heroically toss my hat away. I live this movie. Trouble is, when I meet people who have this need to “understand” me better, if I tell them to just watch “Joe” and they’ll know me more, they get this really troubled expression across their faces…. Oh well. It’s our secret!!!

You are right, most JVTV fans would love to have a reasonable facsimile of the hula lamp. I wish there were some way to use a "standard issue" hula lamp and somehow, if nothing else, find a way to have the music play when you want it. Of course, the lamp shade in the movie helps make the for whole effect, and I don't know what can be done there. Anyway, I may settle for getting a "standard" that fits as best as possible and play the music when I want.
I hope you come up with a good idea - Good Luck!

okay, okay, the movie is a favourite bit of romantic escapism for me....what I would give to have such a lamp in my desk!
Anyone have any idea how to get one?
What a marketing idea!

Hello -
I'm a big "Joe" fan. When it came out I was a teen-ager I was too young to appreciate it and thought it was pretty bad. But then for some odd reason I ended up w/ a video of it as a gift and out of boredom years later I watched it and really liked it for all the reasons we here all understand. Later friends were over and we watched it again and liked it more. This continued for years...liking it more each time and eventually having most of the lines down - as well family members and close friends.
Not being able to find the soundtrack has been a disappointment for many years but today is my mom's b-day so I thought I'd look one last time to see if I could find it online to download (and burn a c.d. for her). Much to my surprise I found your soundtrack in MP3 format! The only problem is that once it was downloaded I realized it was out of order so I took the time to figure out - based on memory - which song should come in what order. It's perfect now. :-) She was thrilled and we all listened to it over breakfast - love it! So much!
Ok that's it - just want to say thanks so much for that and for this fabulous website! There's nothing quite like knowing you're not alone. The message of hope that this film sends out to its many viewers - those awake, those half-awake, those even asleep - is pretty powerful in contrast to its silliness and quirkiness; hopeful enough to make a person want to WAKE UP and get out of bed. ;-)

I just watched JVTV again, partly because of the music and I couldn’t find the soundtrack available anywhere. I was so determined to have the music, I used my digital recorder to record some of it while the movie was playing. It was lousy quality, but at least I had it. Then I got online and was looking up the words to the song “Marooned Without You”, one thing let to another (which is wont to happen on the Internet), and I found this website. Words cannot express how thrilled I was that the soundtrack was available for download!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all involved in making this available. I’ve wanted the music, especially “Moonrise” and “Marooned Without You” for a long time (a few years). I tried to find the music after I first saw this movie for the first time (rented it a few years ago), but couldn’t find the music. I had thought the movie would be a bit hokey – I liked the beginning, especially when he quits his job, but I was hooked (line and sinker and all) at the Moonrise scene – the moment that hauntingly beautiful music started, and the huge luminous moon began to rise, I was a goner. The music and message reached right into my soul and took hold. The music, especially the oboe in the first part, is so incredibly beautiful and moving. It must be wonderful to write such moving and inspiring music. I too think this movie is a gem, and I love the soundtrack! I’ve seen many symbols and connections hidden, or not so hidden, through out this movie. One must be very observant to see them. I wonder how many I’ve missed. And I’m thrilled to see the postings here, 783 postings on 79 pages . . . so many ‘voicing’ my feelings, about the music and the movie.
Blessing to you all who made this website and soundtrack available, and everyone who posted their thoughts and feelings.

I am also a big fan of Ossie Davis and loved his role as Marshall in JVTV. He will be missed. The conversation in the limo between Joe and Marshall made me decide to reevaluate my wardrobe, and it is a good thing I did!
I also loved Carol Kane, who played the role of Cassandra, the Hair Dresser, (she was using the stage name Lisa Le Blanc then). She shines in her small role, but that can be said of any role she takes on.
I'm still pondering the name Shanley gave her in the movie - Cassandra (the daughter of King Priam of Troy, who had the gift of prophesy but was destined to never be believed.)
Well, Ms. Kane was certainly believable and one of the many wonderful actors in JVTV. My very best to them all.
