Another classic scene:
When Joe invites Marshall to have dinner with him, and Marshall declines, saying that he has the wife and kids and the end of the day. And then asks Joe: haven't you got anybody?
To which Joe replies: I guess sometimes you're not suppose to have anybody, there are some doors you have to go through alone. A statement that helped me make some critical decisions about my own life, without consulting others who would have given me bad or negative advice. The scenes between Tom Hanks and Ossie Davis are great.

When Patricia says that she is soul sick the first night on the yacht, I flash back to "It's A Wonderful Life" for two reasons, 1. When George is eating dinner with his father who states that he had another run in Mr. Potter, George asks, "what's wrong with that man? To which is father replies," he's sick in his soul. 2. When George is looking for used luggage and the owner of the store pulls out a large suitcase, George declares " I can use this as a life raft if the ship sinks. I am so glad there are more people who get this little treasure of a movie. I noticed the bolt of lightning in the beginning as the logo of the company, when it strikes and sinks the yacht and as the crooked road that leads up to the mouth of the volcano. "Been a long time coming here, a long time on a crooked road, a long time to meet you."

Greetings Jumpers -
I am profoundly grateful to find this site and I offer my sincere appreciation to Lanny for the soundtrack post. I've been trying to locate it for, well -- years.
I happened to have worked on JVTV in the visual effects department at ILM in 1989. My life mirrored, in a smaller way, Joe's crisis of courage in that, due to misalliance with bad medical advice I was thereafter unable to confront life in the same fashion ever again. Drama? Maybe. Life is dramatic. Since then, in real sense, the movie has been a stone in my foundation.
My admiration for John Patrick Shanley is vast.
I worked with Mr. Shanley again, albeit briefly, a few years later on "Congo" Had some residuals of the same fears to face in my life -- different jungle though. Came out alive and stronger.
Anyway: LEAP. Fear nothing. Live large. Tell her you love her. Jump holding hands.
Consequence is a big phony.
stay well -

Wow, I just discovered this site, and its like coming out of the closet. I love this movie deeply, and did so from the first time I saw it at a theater. A movie about coming awake, about moving beyond fear, about self discovery....an amazing movie...it changed my life. Now, I am older, and sometimes, like now, when I am once again trying to row and move past fear, I remember this movie and watch it, for inspiration, and with gratitude. One thing though, I found out the music is once again sold out, so if anyone knows where I can find it, please let me know. I remember reading a poor review of this movie from the SF Chronicle, where the critic said the music was too perfect...what an idiot! Second, about the lightning bolt, I do not think of it as a lightning bolt at all...in fact, the bolt is shaped to look like.....a PATHWAY. I think it relates to Joe's key line..."Life is a crooked path." Thank you all for your messages...you have made my day.

Thank you Ken, for the information. I am a songwriter and performer and have started to write a novel in the past. Seeing as I have a great love for this movie, I would like to attempt to write a book of my own about it, even if for personal satisfaction. This movie is a wonder that captivates and elevates the mind. One of motion pictures finest works of art. Also one of the most romantic films. As i watch I can almost visualize myself being Joe, and experiencing all he experiences.
Future directors should take lessons from this film. Most movies today are either cutsey love stories, vulgar sex comedies or movies with way too low sound quality for speaking parts and booming ear splitting music and special effects. I guess they don't believe dialogue is important anymore.
Joe Versus the Volcano speaks to the audience and almost every line is important and none wasted.
One of my favorite parts actually is when Joe is with Angelica. By her saying "I have no response to that" is like saying that is not what I wanted to hear. Joe's affect on her is profound and by the time Joe leaves her, you just know she will miss him. He has proven to her he is a valiant, noble character. Now, back to Felix and his bag of tricks.

There is a book containing the script of "Joe Versus the Volcano." It is "Moonstruck, Joe Versus the Volcano, and Five Corners: Screenplays" by John Patrick Shanley. They have it at Amazon.com for $15.00. I hope this helps, Alex.

I kind of get that feeling from this movie, that it was shortened. Nowadays it seems like when you go to the movies, you almost can't wait for it to end. Here it seemes like there could be missing parts or deleted scenes. In one way I would love to see them, but in another I would like to leave the movie as it is. However I do remember the first time I saw the Honeymooners cut out parts! There's a show with a big moon and a face in it! If I knew right now there was a Joe Versus the Volcano book, I would run right out and get it and savor every line. Maybe one day someone will write a book based on the movie.

I once found the original script online---the religious characters on the plane had more of a role.
